Position:               Physiotherapist



Position Summary:

Is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the physiotherapy services provided to residents. Manages a caseload of residents with a wide variety of complex needs.

The physiotherapist works with residents to identify and improve their movement and function in order to achieve the highest level of independent function. The mission, vision and values of the Home provide the direction for the provision of physiotherapy services.

  1. Assesses and provides treatments to residents using core physiotherapy skills.
  2. Interprets and analyses clinical and non clinical information to form an accurate diagnosis and prognoses in a wide range of highly complex conditions, to recommend the best course of action and to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
  3. Organizes designated resident caseload effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
  4. Works with residents, caregivers and families to develop treatment goals.
  5. Monitors, evaluates and modifies treatment in order to measure progress and  ensure effectiveness of interventions and to ensure a high standard of evidence based clinical and professional practice is maintained.
  6. Conducts seating assessments for the Red Cross specialized equipment program.
  7. Coordinates with outside agencies to secure assessed equipment needs for residents.
  8. Participates in resident care conferences.
  9. Delegates appropriate case load to Physiotherapy assistant providing appropriate supervision.
  10. Responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties, ensures the safe use of equipment by others through teaching, training and supervision of practice.
  11. Maintains accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation in keeping with legal and professional standards.
  12. Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with medical, nursing and other disciplines to ensure delivery of a coordinated multidisciplinary, resident focused service.
  13. Consistently follows high standards of infection control practice especially with reference to hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
  14. Is an active participant in the Falls and Injury Prevention Program and conducts ongoing resident fall risk assessments.
  15. Consults with and advises the Director of Resident Care on all concerns related to resident care.
  16. Maintain accurate monthly statistics. Prepare annual departmental report.



Graduate of an accredited School of Physiotherapy

Bachelor of Physiotherapy

Current registration with the Nova Scotia College of Physiotherapy

Experience in gerontology an asset


Other Requirements:

       Good general health which allows for the ability to attend work on a regular basis      

       Excellent rapport with the elderly

       Must have a good attendance record

       Good personal hygiene

       Personal police record check clearance and negative Vulnerable Sector Check


Knowledge and Skills:

      Organized and able to set priorities in a constantly changing work environment.

      Demonstrates critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities

      Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with residents, family, staff and    

      other members of the health care team.

      Must be a highly motivated independent worker



      Knowledge of and implements the Mission statement and Core Values of the Home

      Ensures residents are cared for safely and with dignity following departmental    

      policies and procedures.

      Practices and promotes occupational health and safety


Continuing Education Responsibilities:

     Attends in-services and educational/training sessions for self development

     Attends compulsory CPR, fire safety and WHMIS training as required

     Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings
